Grzegorz Karnas will lead a workshop for vocalists at the Hevhetia Summer Music Festival 2014

The Hevhetia Summer Music Festival 2014 is not only a showcase of publishing activities of the music label Hevhetia, but it has also its educational dimension. Renowned Polish jazz singer and vocalist Grzegorz Karnas besides his concert will lead a special workshop for active singers, vocalists and instrumentalists as well.

The workshop is for everyone who is interested in discovering what the „backstage“ of interaction in making music is all about.

It is open for anyone who wants to use their voice in a manner that doesn’t stay in the way of expressing their emotions.

It is open to non musicians or amateur musitians who are interested in the nature of their own voice.

It is open to working singers who would rather try to establish how they really sound in order to make sure if they can use that sound in music.

It is open to instrumentalists who are interested in the nature of creativity and the obstacles on the way to it.

The major goal of the workshop is to underline the importance of:

  • voice as a tool for conveying emotions
  • understanding of how one should breathe
  • creative approach to everything one does
  • ability to interconnect in rhythm in order to to enjoy making music in a spontaneous, improvisational way

The major exercise of the workshop is improvising musical forms based on interaction between lyrics and accompaniment. Materials and the nature of the exercice should be a surprise, therefore their content shouldn’t be decribed for being used as a incentive to draw the interest of potential participants.

The workshop is scheduled on Friday, July 25th from 10 a.m. It will be held at Kasárne/ Kulturpark Košice on Kukučínova Street. Due to the limited number of participants the reservation is possible on the website of the festival http://www.hevhetiafest.sk/en/workshop/. Maximum number of active participants is 50. Participation fee is 10 €. The workshop will be held in one of the concert halls of Kasárne/Kulturpark. Visitors can also participate in the workshop as spectators. The entrance fee for this event for spectators is 5 €.

Trio Port Mone (BLR)

The instrumental trio Port Mone (Aleksy Vorsoba – accordion, Sergey Kravchenko – percussion, Aleksey Vacnuk – bass guitar) is known for its unique, intricate and complex melodies with a prevalent use of accordion. Since its creation in 2006 in Minsk, Belarus, Port Mone has become a darling of Eastern Europan music critics and a welcome participant of multiple international music festivals. Music of the trio steps away from the typical stylistic norms and links classical music, noise, experimental music and folk in refreshingly new ways. Its debut album Dip released by a well-respected independent label Geometry (Russia) brought them recognition and international acclaim. It was noted by the critics and won Foreign Expert´s Prize at Experty.by annual awards in Belarus (voted by critics from Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine). It was called the best foreign album of 2009 in Croatia and was nominated for highly respectable Steppenwolf Award as The Best Album and The music of 2010 in Russia. Music by Port Mone was used in several documentaries and animation films. The trio also provided live music score to silent movie Khlib (1930, Ukraine). Tracks by Port Mone were included in compilations in Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Sweden, Scotland and USA. Natural sincerity of the music of the trio fascinates and captivates widely different people. Critics point out that Port Mone is a brand-new phenomenon that is difficult to fit into the stylistic forms and they admit that no words can describe the impact of this relatively simple music.

Recently Port Mone recorded a new album titled Thou in unusual acoustic conditions, outside the studio in the forest. The method and context of the record as well as the sound solution of the album constitute a self-sustained statement, expressing the actual creative mission of Port Mone an appeal to something natural, pure, and primordial in human soul that exists beyond social regulations and codes.

The Summer music festival Hevhetia coming back after the break

Be distracted with good music

After a five-year break the third year of The Summer Music Festival Hevhetia 2014 will enrich the Košice music scene with the undoubtedly interesting program. Within almost all July visitors can enjoy an offer of publishing activities of the eponymous music label.

This summer festival is one of the important components of the platform Hevhetia we create. We want to provide space, as a bonus for artists, who release their records at our label. The fact, that the label is  broad-spectrum, we are trying to conceive the festival in the same way. This year it’s more about jazz. But at least the opening concert at the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth only by the atmosphere of its place in conjunction with Gregorian chants performed by Voces Gregorianae Cassovienses and improvised saxophone will be interesting for all,“ as the festival director Ján Sudzina explained.

The festival can attract audience to, among others, the Polish jazz singer Grzegorz Karnas, who, because of his linking non-traditional jazz, classical and alternatives has been considered a kind of vocal enfant terrible, or Belarusian instrumental trio Port Mone known for its unique and intricate songs.

Also young Polish blood embodied here by Aga Derlac Trio can bring surprise and delight, which during its two-year existence, due its virtuosity and energy, gained a position of one of the most popular jazz groups in Poland. The entire program as well as detailed information on the festival can be found at www.hevhetiafest.sk. „I look forward to Peter Katina from Košice, who is recording a new album with absolutely uncompromising works,“ revealed J. Sudzina also another artist´s name of this year’s festival.

Tickets will be sold at the venue of concerts in the information pavilion Delta in Kasárne/Kulturpark and City Information Center on Hlavná street both in Košice. The first concert in the St. Elizabeth Cathedral will be free. Other concerts will be in format of double-concerts and each entrance to such a „twin“ will cost 8 €. Of course, there will be offered discounted ticket pass for the whole festival for 20 €.

Since at that time the Month of Author Reading will proceed, festival organizers together with the organizers of the literary festival will invite the audience to „share it“. So the concerts dates are aligned with separate readings, so that the first author reading will be at 5 p.m., the first concert at 6 p.m., the second reading will be at 7 p.m. followed by the second concert at 8 p.m. And those, who take part in the reading, will get discounted tickets for that evening.

Interesting „non-concert“ event will also be a workshop of vocalists G. Karnas, which will take place the day after his concert. It is intended for all who are interested in exploring the nature of interactions in the creation of music. There are welcome active singers, who want to discover their real sounding, but also for instrumentalists who are interested in the nature of creativity and the elimination of obstacles to its achievement.

We want Hevhetia to become also a platform for beginning artists. That is the reason why we publish a lot of debuts. Educational things are part of the preparation for the new hatchery of Hevhetia,“ concludes J. Sudzina.

Hudba tria sa odchyľuje od typických štylistických noriem a prepája klasickú hudbu, noise, experimentálnu a ľudovú hudbu novým, osviežujúcim spôsobom. Debutový album tria pod názvom Dip vydalo rešpektované ruské nezávislé vydavateľstvo Geometry a nahrávka im priniesla uznanie a medzinárodné ocenenia. Album získal ocenenie Foreign Expert´s Prize v Bielorusku (hodnotený kritikmi z Poľska, Ruska, Litvy, Lotyšska a Ukrajiny).
